Kabak Tunnel is one of the hidden gems of Turkey's Lycian coast, a dramatic underwater passage system located near the remote and beautiful Kabak Bay, south of Ölüdeniz. Descending to thirty meters through pristine Mediterranean waters, this advanced site offers the thrill of tunnel diving in a wild, relatively undeveloped stretch of coastline where the mountains meet the sea and the underwater world feels genuinely untouched. Kabak Bay itself is legendary among travelers to Turkey's southwest coast, a steep-sided valley that drops dramatically to a crescent beach accessible only by foot or by sea. This remoteness translates directly to the underwater environment, where the absence of development-related impacts results in exceptionally clear water and marine life that has not been habituated to heavy diving traffic. The tunnel system that gives the site its name is formed within the rocky headlands that frame the bay, natural passages carved through the limestone by the ceaseless work of waves and geological time. The main tunnel at Kabak is a genuine swim-through of considerable length, penetrating the rocky reef and emerging on the other side into open water. Entry into the tunnel reveals a world of filtered blue light, the sun's rays penetrating the rock openings to create ethereal illumination that shifts and dances with the surface conditions above. The tunnel walls are colonized by encrusting organisms that thrive in the reduced light, with sponges, bryozoans, and anemones creating a dense coating that transforms the raw rock into a living surface of texture and color. Where the tunnel curves or narrows, the light effects intensify, producing photographic opportunities that are among the most dramatic available on the Turquoise Coast. The tunnel dimensions require advanced diving skills but are generous enough to navigate without the specialized equipment and training that true cave systems demand. Nevertheless, excellent buoyancy control is essential to avoid contact with the walls and ceiling, and awareness of air consumption and distance to open water should be maintained at all times. The fine sediment present in some sections can reduce visibility rapidly if disturbed, making proper finning technique crucial. Experienced local guides lead divers through the tunnel with practiced confidence, positioning the group to experience the best light effects and pointing out the marine life highlights along the way. Beyond the tunnel, the surrounding reef at Kabak offers superb diving in its own right. The rocky coastline drops away into deeper water, creating walls and slopes covered in healthy Mediterranean marine growth. Gorgonian sea fans spread across the current-swept faces, their purple and red branches adding elegance to the underwater landscape. The reef structure includes numerous smaller caves, overhangs, and crevices that extend the site's appeal well beyond the main tunnel feature, giving divers reason to explore broadly during their bottom time. Marine life at Kabak reflects the healthy, relatively undisturbed nature of this stretch of coast. Grouper of impressive size are regular residents, their confident demeanor suggesting that encounters with divers are infrequent enough to leave them unconcerned. Moray eels occupy the abundant crevice habitat, while octopus demonstrate their intelligence in the complex rocky terrain. Schools of bream and other reef fish populate the mid-water, and the current that flows past the headlands occasionally brings larger pelagic visitors including amberjack and barracuda that patrol the deeper sections of the dive. The journey to Kabak Tunnel is part of the experience. The boat ride from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz follows one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean, passing beneath towering cliffs, secluded beaches, and the green slopes of the Lycian Way hiking trail. Arriving at the dive site with this dramatic scenery as a backdrop creates a sense of adventure and remoteness that elevates the entire diving experience. Kabak Tunnel is the kind of dive site that serious underwater explorers dream about: a natural wonder in a wild setting, offering genuine adventure and beauty in equal measure.
