Butterfly Beach is one of the most accessible and pleasantly surprising shore dive sites on the California coast, located on the exclusive waterfront of Montecito near Santa Barbara — a stretch of shoreline better known for its celebrity estates and palm-lined streets than for diving. Yet immediately offshore, beneath the calm surface of the Santa Barbara Channel, lies a charming and productive marine environment that rewards divers willing to make the short effort of a beach entry. The entry is straightforward — a gradual sandy beach leads into the water, with rocky reef appearing within a short swim from shore at depths of 15 to 30 feet. The bottom transitions from patchy sand to irregular rocky reef covered in the classic Southern California invertebrate community: aggregating anemones in their dense colonies, brilliant orange garibaldi patrolling territorial boundaries, and the jewel-like orange and purple color combinations of bat stars and sea stars on the rock surfaces. The kelp, while not as dramatic as the dense forests of more exposed sites, provides sufficient structure for kelp bass and senoritas to work through in pursuit of invertebrate prey. California sheephead appear regularly on these reefs, the adult males distinctive with their bicolored black-and-red bodies. Horn sharks rest in rocky crevices, their small spotted forms perfectly camouflaged. Bat rays cruise gracefully over the sand between reef sections, occasionally pausing to excavate invertebrates with their flapping pectoral fins. The Channel Islands are visible from shore on clear days, lending the surface interval a particularly beautiful quality. Water temperatures are mild by Santa Barbara standards — the nearshore area is somewhat sheltered — and conditions are often calmer than more exposed coastal sites. Butterfly Beach is an ideal choice for beginner divers building ocean experience, for those visiting Santa Barbara who want to incorporate diving into their trip, or for experienced divers seeking a relaxed, uncrowded experience in exceptionally pleasant surroundings.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
