Resting on the silty bottom of Kaneohe Bay on Oahu's windward coast, the Corsair is one of the most historically evocative and technically demanding dive sites in all of Hawaii. The aircraft is a Vought F4U Corsair, the iconic gull-winged American fighter that became a symbol of Pacific air superiority during World War II. This particular aircraft met its end in 1945 during a training accident — a relatively gentle crash that left the plane largely intact on the seafloor, where it has rested undisturbed ever since, becoming one of the very few accessible WWII aircraft wrecks in the Hawaiian Islands. The Corsair sits at a depth of approximately 100 feet, its distinctive inverted gull-wing configuration still recognizable despite decades of coral colonization. The aircraft faces bow-down into the slight slope of the bay floor, cockpit canopy long gone but the fuselage largely preserved. Coral has encrusted the wings, engine cowling, and tail assembly, while sponges and tunicates fill the recesses. The propeller blades are bent from the impact but still recognizable. For aviation history enthusiasts and military history divers, crouching beside the cockpit and examining the instrument panel and throttle quadrant — now thick with marine growth — is a profoundly moving experience that bridges the distance between wartime history and the living present. The surrounding bay floor supports a variety of marine life typical of Hawaii's protected inshore waters. Spotted eagle rays glide overhead in Kaneohe Bay, and Hawaiian green sea turtles frequently pass through the area. The silt bottom can be stirred by surge or careless fin technique, reducing visibility rapidly, which is one of the reasons this dive carries an advanced rating. Strong open-water buoyancy control and good situational awareness are essential. Access is by boat from the Kaneohe side of Oahu, with several Honolulu-based operators running dedicated trips to this historically significant site. For divers with a passion for living history and the technical discipline to appreciate a delicate environment without disturbing it, the Corsair is an unparalleled Pacific dive experience.
