Cypress Spring is a beautiful and serene freshwater spring dive site on Holmes Creek near Vernon in the Florida Panhandle — a natural artesian spring that emerges from the Floridian aquifer limestone to create one of the clearest and most photogenic freshwater diving environments in northwest Florida. The spring is characterized by a crystal-clear pool of 68-degree water draining into Holmes Creek, a classic Florida blackwater river whose tannin-stained dark water provides a dramatic visual contrast with the vivid blue-green clarity of the spring itself. This contrast between spring clarity and river darkness is one of the characteristic and beautiful features of the Florida spring system — the boundary between the two water types often visible as a sharp halocline-like interface that creates an almost surreal underwater landscape. The spring basin reaches depths of approximately 11 meters (about 36 feet) in the main flow area, with the spring vent and its upwelling column of clear water providing the cleanest and most vertically dramatic section of the dive. Visibility within the spring basin regularly exceeds 20 meters, making it one of the clearest freshwater environments accessible in the Florida Panhandle. The freshwater community at Cypress Spring is typical of Florida Panhandle spring systems: Florida largemouth bass cruise through the spring run with relaxed confidence, their large forms visible at considerable distance in the exceptional clarity. Bluegill and sunfish school in the mid-water near aquatic vegetation. Softshell turtles glide through the spring basin with surprising grace. The site is managed as a private recreational area with a well-maintained entry point, and kayaking through the spring run to Holmes Creek provides an above-water perspective on the same extraordinary water quality that divers experience beneath the surface. Cypress Spring is a peaceful, uncrowded alternative to the more heavily visited Panhandle spring systems.
