The Mercy Jesus is an artificial reef wreck in the South Broward County offshore zone — a deliberately sunk vessel resting at approximately 21 meters (about 70 feet) in the warm, clear Atlantic waters off Fort Lauderdale, forming part of the dense cluster of artificial reef structures that collectively create one of Southeast Florida's most productive and visited offshore diving destinations. The name reflects the personal tribute tradition of Florida's artificial reef program, where sunk vessels are frequently dedicated to individuals significant to the local diving and maritime community. In the years since its sinking the Mercy Jesus has developed the character of a mature artificial reef: the hull and structural elements encrusted with tube sponges, encrusting corals, wire corals, and gorgonians that provide habitat for a cascade of reef species through the water column. The site shares the characteristic marine community of South Broward's artificial reef complex. Goliath grouper — the largest and most charismatic residents of this reef zone — have established themselves on the deeper structural features with characteristic confidence, approaching divers in the close, deliberate manner that makes encounters with these enormous fish so compelling. Schools of grunt and snapper occupy the interior spaces in dense formations, the fish packing together in synchronized movements that seem to breathe with a collective rhythm. Large barracuda position themselves in the current shadow of prominent superstructure elements. Nurse sharks rest beneath hull sections on the sandy bottom. Sea turtles — loggerhead and green — pass through this section of the offshore reef regularly. The South Broward wreck complex is best explored over multiple tank dives, as the concentration of artificial reef sites within a compact geographical area allows progressive exploration of a diverse collection of vessels, each with its own particular character and resident marine life community.
