Molasses Reef is the crown jewel of Key Largo's offshore dive sites and one of the most frequently visited reefs in the entire Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary — a name that is almost universally known among divers who have spent any time exploring the Keys. Situated approximately six miles offshore from Key Largo in the upper Keys, this expansive reef system spans an area large enough to occupy multiple consecutive dives, with distinct zones ranging from the shallow spur-and-groove formations near the reef crest to deeper outer reef walls and sandy expanses beyond. The reef takes its name from the Molasses light, a red navigation marker that has guided mariners around this hazard since the nineteenth century — a reminder that these same reefs that delight today's divers have claimed countless ships over the centuries. At depths typically ranging from 5 to 55 feet, Molasses Reef is accessible to divers of all experience levels, with the shallowest sections suitable for snorkelers and beginners. The coral diversity is exceptional: pillar coral stands represent some of the healthiest remaining colonies in the Keys, the slender pillars covered in living polyp tissue and extending several feet from the reef surface. Star coral formations create massive topographic features that serve as navigational landmarks and housing for generations of fish. In the grooves between spur formations, sea fans and whip corals sway in the current beside brain coral domes. The marine life at Molasses Reef is legendary: nurse sharks rest in clusters beneath coral ledges, seemingly indifferent to the parade of divers passing overhead. Green sea turtles and loggerheads graze on sponges and algae throughout the reef structure. Eagle rays cruise the deeper margins with wing-like sweeps. Large barracuda position themselves in current-shadow spots near prominent coral structures, while schools of Atlantic spadefish and permit circle above the reef. Goliath grouper occupy specific territories year after year, growing to enormous proportions in these protected waters. Molasses Reef is a site that justifies multiple visits on any Keys diving trip and one of the definitive experiences of Caribbean reef diving.
