Canyon Lake is a beautiful reservoir in the Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio — one of the Highland Lakes of the Colorado/Guadalupe River system and the primary advanced freshwater diving destination in the greater San Antonio metropolitan area, offering divers access to some of the deepest and clearest freshwater available in the Texas inland diving circuit. The lake was created by Canyon Dam on the Guadalupe River in 1964, and the reservoir's deep blue water in its main basin channel provides diving conditions notably superior to many Texas freshwater sites. The North Park access point on Canyon Lake is the primary diver access location, with organized facilities for gear assembly and entry to the lake. At its deepest sections accessible from North Park, the lake descends to approximately 37 meters (about 120 feet) — deep enough to put some zones at advanced depth limits and require proper gas management and training. The water clarity at Canyon Lake is impressive by Texas standards, with visibility sometimes reaching 10 to 20 feet in the clearest conditions, though boat traffic and seasonal algae growth can reduce this. The underwater environment features the submerged Hill Country terrain: limestone bedrock, rocky outcroppings, and the skeletal remains of cedar trees that stood on the canyon bottom before the reservoir filled in 1964, now stripped to bleached white forms that create an eerie, beautiful underwater landscape. Largemouth bass are the most visually prominent fish species — large individuals inhabit the submerged timber and rock structure in this section of the lake. Striped bass cruise the open water column. Catfish occupy the deeper, darker zones. Canyon Lake is a valued resource for the San Antonio diving community and provides the closest accessible advanced freshwater diving to this major Texas city.
