Paradise Springs is an evocative and beautiful private spring dive site near Ocklawaha in north-central Florida — a limestone sinkhole and spring system that offers advanced divers access to a hauntingly beautiful freshwater environment featuring exceptional water clarity, a dramatic flooded forest character, and a cave entrance for properly trained and equipped divers to explore. The spring basin is characterized by submerged cypress trees that stand in the clear water like ghost sentinels, their pale trunks rising from the spring floor in a forest of organic columns that creates an atmosphere quite unlike any other dive environment in Florida. The dead wood of these submerged trees is thoroughly colonized by freshwater invertebrates and algae, and the combination of the skeletal trees, the crystalline water, and the dappled light filtering through the surface creates an aesthetic quality that draws underwater photographers specifically for its otherworldly visual character. Depths reach approximately 30 meters (about 100 feet) in the cave and deeper sinkhole sections, with the cavern and cave entrance accessible only to certified cave divers with appropriate training and equipment. The shallow areas of the spring basin are accessible to certified open-water divers and offer exceptional visibility for exploring the sunken forest environment and observing the typical Florida spring freshwater species. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish cruise through the submerged trees with the unhurried familiarity of fish that have inhabited this space for generations. Florida softshell turtles rest on submerged wood structures. The spring itself maintains its characteristic constant temperature of approximately 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Paradise Springs is a small, privately operated facility with limited visitor capacity, contributing to a quiet and intimate diving atmosphere that is particularly valued by divers seeking an undisturbed, reflective experience.
