The Caves is a distinctive and somewhat unusual advanced dive site in the shallow nearshore waters of Broward County — a series of natural limestone cavities and undercuts along a nearshore rock ledge at a maximum depth of just 9 meters (about 30 feet), where the advanced rating reflects not depth but the challenging conditions of an in-shore site exposed to heavy boat traffic, currents, and surge. The limestone formations here feature the characteristic undercut ledges and cave-like recesses typical of Southeast Florida's shallow inshore reef, where the soluble nature of the limestone has created pockets, overhangs, and small cavern spaces that shelter marine life in predictable concentrations. Despite the challenging conditions, the site rewards experienced divers with genuinely interesting cave and cavern features at accessible depths. The overhangs and cave entrances shelter nurse sharks resting in the shade — sometimes multiple individuals cramped together in a particularly favored shelter. Spiny lobster pack the cavern recesses in impressive densities, their antennae projecting from under ledges and rock piles. Moray eels are abundantly present throughout the cave structures. The external reef surface and sandy areas around the caves host the standard Broward nearshore community: snapper, grunt, various reef fish, and occasional sea turtles. The site's position in shallow nearshore water means it is affected by surge on windy days and visibility can be significantly reduced compared to the offshore reef sites, with particulate from the sandy bottom easily stirred into suspension. Careful dive planning around weather windows, tides, and boat traffic patterns is important for a rewarding experience. The Caves appeals to Broward divers seeking a local, accessible alternative to the offshore wreck and reef circuit, with the character of a true South Florida limestone cave environment.
