Seal Dog Rock is a remote and rewarding dive site in the outer British Virgin Islands — a rock formation in the northern island group near the Dogs, a cluster of small uninhabited islands at the northwest end of the BVI archipelago that offer some of the finest and most pristine diving in the entire British Virgin Islands. The Dogs — Great Dog, West Dog, George Dog, and Seal Dog — are accessible only by boat from Tortola, Virgin Gorda, or Cruz Bay, St. John, and their relative remoteness has helped preserve the exceptional marine life and coral health that distinguish them from the more heavily visited sites closer to Road Town and the charter sailing hub. Seal Dog Rock rises from the surrounding sandy and rocky bottom to near the surface, and the underwater topography around the rock features dramatic ledges, overhangs, and crevices that shelter a rich community of Caribbean reef species. Nurse sharks are reliably found resting in groups beneath ledges and in cavities throughout the rock structure — the northern BVI sites see larger concentrations of resting nurse sharks than more southerly sites, and encounters with groups of three or four individuals in a single cavern are not unusual. Caribbean reef sharks are occasionally encountered in the open water around the outer rocks of the Dogs, adding an exciting pelagic element to the dive. Tarpon cruise through in impressive formations. Dense schools of creole wrasse and blue chromis fill the mid-water column above the reef. Hawksbill turtles are present throughout. The beginner rating reflects the moderate depth and generally accessible conditions, but the boat journey to the Dogs and the more exposed northern position mean sea conditions require monitoring.
