String of Pearls is one of St. Croix's most visually distinctive advanced dive sites, a series of coral pinnacles that rise from the sandy seafloor in a line formation — the string that gives the site its name — each pinnacle a pearl of dense coral growth surrounded by the clear Caribbean blue. The site combines the navigational challenge of a multi-pinnacle drift dive with the biological richness that isolated coral structures in open sand always accumulate, creating a dive experience that rewards both the technical diver who manages the conditions and the naturalist who studies the life concentrated on each individual pinnacle. The pinnacles themselves rise to varying heights from the sandy base, each one a self-contained ecosystem. The lower sections of the pinnacles support the sponge and encrusting coral communities typical of shaded, nutrient-receiving substrate — basket sponges of impressive size, encrusting bright orange sponges, and the black coral that establishes on the deeper, less-illuminated faces. Moving up toward the pinnacle summits, where light is strongest, the coral composition shifts to the branching and massive hard coral species that require direct sunlight for photosynthesis. Fish use the String of Pearls in the way that isolated structures in open habitat are always used — as aggregation points where the biological richness of the reef is concentrated in space surrounded by unproductive sand. Large schools of horse-eye jacks orbit the pinnacles in circling formations, occasionally tightening as predator pressure increases. Cubera snapper — some of the largest snapper in the Virgin Islands — hold station around the pinnacle bases. Caribbean reef sharks patrol the spaces between pinnacles, their consistent presence a mark of the site's ecological health and productivity. The advanced rating reflects the current that runs along this stretch of St. Croix's coast, which can be significant and requires the skills to manage drift diving effectively. Local operators typically plan the dive as a drift, allowing divers to move with the current from pinnacle to pinnacle rather than fighting back against the flow. In these conditions, the String of Pearls reveals its full beauty — each pinnacle appearing from the blue as you approach, its details resolving from silhouette to rich coral architecture as you drift past.
