Con Dao Pier is one of the most unusual and macro-photography-rich dive sites in Vietnam — a pier dive in the Con Dao archipelago, an island group at the southern tip of Vietnam in the South China Sea that represents one of the country's most important and pristine marine environments. Con Dao National Park protects approximately 160 square kilometers of marine habitat including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and the beaches where the largest remaining nesting population of green sea turtles in Vietnam comes ashore each year. Despite the shallow maximum depth of just 6 meters (about 20 feet), the site carries an advanced rating — likely reflecting the currents and water clarity challenges that can develop at the pier structure, or the level of marine ecology knowledge required to fully appreciate the extraordinary invertebrate diversity found in pier dive environments. Pier pilings provide hard substrate colonized in extraordinary density by encrusting and sessile organisms: hydroids, bryozoans, and various sponge species form a dense biological fur on the concrete and metal surfaces that serves as habitat for a spectacular array of critters. Nudibranchs of numerous species feed on the encrusting organisms, their vivid colors contrasting with the drab but biologically rich surfaces they inhabit. Juvenile fish of many species shelter in the structural complexity of the pier environment during their most vulnerable life stages. Pipefish and seahorses cling to vegetation and structure adjacent to the pier. The macro diversity of a productive pier dive environment frequently rivals the most celebrated tropical reef sites for pure species richness, and Con Dao's exceptional water quality elevates this to one of Vietnam's premier macro diving experiences.
