Hon Mo is an advanced dive site in the Cu Lao Cham Marine Reserve — a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve off Hoi An in Vietnam's Quang Nam province — one of the outer islands in the Cham archipelago whose position in the open South China Sea creates the exposed, current-influenced diving conditions that characterize the most dramatic sites in this exceptional marine park. The Cham Islands, accessed from Hoi An or Da Nang via a 30-to-60-minute boat journey, represent one of the finest and most relatively pristine marine environments on Vietnam's central coast. The reserve encompasses approximately 235 square kilometers of marine habitat including deep-water reef, seagrass beds, and the island reef systems that are the primary focus of the diving industry. Hon Mo's position further from the main island cluster gives it a more isolated, open-water character — the underwater topography features the volcanic rock foundations typical of the Cham archipelago, with dramatic underwater formations of boulders, crevices, and overhangs creating the habitat heterogeneity that supports impressive biodiversity. The advanced designation reflects both the depth potential and the current patterns that develop around this outer island, where tidal flow can create drift diving conditions requiring experience and composure. The reward for these conditions is access to the larger pelagic species that visit exposed offshore reefs: barracuda schools, various trevally and jack species, and the reef sharks — whitetip and grey reef — that patrol the outer reef edges. The coral community at Hon Mo features excellent health compared to more visited Vietnamese sites, with diverse coverage and the recovering coral populations that characterize the well-managed Cham Islands reserve.
