Phat Wall is an advanced wall dive in the offshore waters north of Nha Trang Bay — a submerged cliff face in the outer reef zone near Hon Lon (Big Island) and the surrounding island group, where the South China Sea depth allows the dramatic vertical reef development that characterizes the best wall diving on Vietnam's central coast. The site descends to approximately 18 meters (about 60 feet) on the wall face itself, with the vertical relief creating the depth gradient and current exposure that concentrate the species typically associated with wall diving environments: larger pelagic visitors cruise the blue water adjacent to the wall face, while the encrusted vertical surface supports invertebrate communities and fish species that favor protected, current-washed habitat. The wall's surface is colonized by the diverse encrusting life of Vietnam's central coast reef: sponges in varied colors, wire corals and gorgonian sea fans extending into the current perpendicular to the wall, and the cup corals and tubeworms that fill every available crevice with color and texture. The fish community at Phat Wall includes the schooling species typical of current-swept reef walls: fusilier schools stream past in flowing formations, various chromis and damselfish hover in the water column, and the predators that attend fish aggregations — trevally, barracuda, and occasional reef sharks — make passes through the schooling fish with explosive bursts. The advanced rating reflects the open-sea character of this outer reef site, the depth potential below the dive zones, and the current management required to position effectively along the wall face. Access by boat from Nha Trang or nearby Van Phong Bay operators with appropriate knowledge of this northern coastal reef zone.
