Chails Reef is an intermediate dive site in the waters off Espiritu Santo Island in Vanuatu — a coral reef location in the dive zone surrounding Luganville, the island's main town and the primary access point for one of the Pacific's most celebrated diving destinations. Espiritu Santo is globally renowned for the SS President Coolidge shipwreck, but the island's diving encompasses a rich array of reef sites that collectively create a diverse dive environment in the warm, clear waters of the Coral Sea. Chails Reef offers intermediate divers access to the characteristic reef diving of Santo's inner coastal zone: a combination of coral formations, sponge gardens, and the abundant reef fish community typical of Melanesian waters. The site reflects the ecological richness of Vanuatu's relatively well-preserved reef system — the country's low population density and limited industrial development have insulated its reef ecosystems from many of the stressors affecting reefs elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific. The coral community at Chails Reef features the diverse growth forms typical of the Western Pacific: brain coral formations, star coral domes, and areas of branching coral provide the architectural variety that supports different species assemblages. The fish diversity of the Coral Sea is evident throughout the site: surgeonfish and unicornfish in mixed grazing schools, various grouper and coral trout occupying reef features, and the schooling chromis and fusiliers that fill the mid-water column. Nudibranchs and other invertebrates on the encrusted rock surfaces provide excellent macro subjects. The intermediate difficulty reflects the depth range and occasional current typical of Santo's coastal reef sites, and the dive is best conducted with local dive guide support from Luganville's experienced dive operators.
