Kevin's Reef is a beginner-friendly dive site located in the pristine waters of the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Geraldton in Western Australia. This remote reef system sits at the meeting point of tropical and temperate ocean currents, creating one of the most unique marine environments in the world. The Houtman Abrolhos is an archipelago of 122 islands and extensive coral reef systems located approximately 60 kilometers offshore from Geraldton. The islands are bathed by the warm Leeuwin Current flowing south from the tropics, which allows coral reef development at a latitude that would normally be too cool - making the Abrolhos the southernmost true coral reef system in the Indian Ocean. Kevin's Reef showcases this unique ecological blend beautifully. Tropical coral species grow alongside temperate organisms in a combination seen nowhere else on Earth. Hard coral coverage is excellent, with species more typically associated with the tropics thriving in these southern waters. The reef supports an equally unusual mix of fish species, with tropical reef fish swimming alongside temperate species in a biological melting pot. The marine life extends beyond the reef itself. The Abrolhos Islands are famous for their populations of Australian sea lions and various seabird species, and the surrounding waters support healthy populations of fish, crayfish, and other marine organisms. The area is also a significant nesting ground for green turtles. Diving conditions at Kevin's Reef are suitable for beginners when weather permits. The relatively shallow reef top provides comfortable depths, and visibility in the clear oceanic water can be excellent, often exceeding 15 meters. Water temperatures, warmed by the Leeuwin Current, range from about 19 to 24 degrees. Access to the Abrolhos requires a boat trip from Geraldton or a charter flight to the islands, adding a sense of adventure and expedition to the diving experience. Kevin's Reef at the Abrolhos Islands offers truly unique diving at the crossroads of two oceanic worlds - a destination for divers seeking something genuinely different.
