Supermarket is an aptly named advanced dive site at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands off Geraldton, Western Australia. The name refers to the extraordinary abundance and variety of marine life found here - like browsing the aisles of a supermarket, there is something remarkable in every direction you look. Located approximately 60 kilometers offshore in the Indian Ocean, Supermarket benefits from the warm Leeuwin Current that enables tropical coral reef development at this unusually southern latitude. The result is a reef ecosystem of exceptional diversity, where tropical and temperate species coexist in a marine community found nowhere else on the planet. The underwater terrain at Supermarket features substantial reef structure with walls, overhangs, and coral formations that create complex habitat at various depths. Large coral bommies rise from the seabed, their surfaces covered in a mix of hard and soft corals that reflect the unique biogeographic position of the Abrolhos. The reef architecture creates sheltered spaces, current-swept edges, and open sandy areas that each support different assemblages of marine life. The marine abundance that gives Supermarket its name is genuinely impressive. The site attracts large schools of pelagic fish including trevally, samson fish, and baldchin groper - the latter being a species virtually endemic to Western Australia. Reef sharks patrol the deeper edges, and the area is known for encounters with large rays. The reef surfaces support exceptional invertebrate diversity, with nudibranchs, flatworms, and various crustacean species providing rich macro photography opportunities. The advanced rating reflects the offshore location, the exposure to oceanic conditions, and the depth available at the site. Current can be significant, and conditions must be carefully assessed. Visibility is often outstanding at 15 to 25 meters in the clear Indian Ocean water. Water temperatures range from 19 to 24 degrees. Supermarket is one of the Abrolhos' premier dive sites, offering advanced divers an underwater shopping experience where every aisle overflows with marine treasures.
