Shark and Yolanda Reefs form the crown jewel of Ras Mohammed National Park and rank among the world's most celebrated reef dives — a pair of towering coral pinnacles rising from the deep at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the Gulf of Aqaba and Gulf of Suez converge into the open Red Sea. The meeting of currents concentrates plankton and creates one of the most fish-dense environments in all of Egypt. Shark Reef is the outer pinnacle — a vertical wall plunging past 80 meters into the blue, its face cloaked in gorgonian fans and black coral trees. Divers drift along the wall at 20-30 meters, scanning the blue for grey reef sharks, hammerheads, and the seasonal passage of tuna, giant trevally, and barracuda schools so dense they briefly blot out the sunlight. Yolanda Reef, connected by a shallow saddle, is named for the Cypriot cargo ship M/V Yolanda that sank here in 1980 — the wreck spilled its cargo of toilets, bathtubs, and BMW parts across the saddle, creating an eccentric and unforgettable underwater landscape. The marine biomass is extraordinary. Napoleon wrasse the size of small cars patrol the reef, giant moray eels inhabit every crevice, and hawksbill and green turtles graze the coral heads. Manta rays appear in summer on plankton tides, and whale sharks have been recorded in August and September. The reef top hosts anemone gardens, clownfish colonies, and a full cast of butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and parrotfish. Advanced Open Water is required given the drift, depth, and offshore position. The site is inside the national park (park fees apply) and reached by day boat from Sharm el-Sheikh, typically combined with Anemone City or Jackfish Alley. Visibility regularly exceeds 30-40 meters, and the dive is considered essential for anyone visiting the Red Sea. Best conditions run March to November, with June-September the peak window for pelagic species.
