The Salem Express is the Red Sea's most controversial and emotionally charged wreck — a 100-meter Egyptian passenger ferry that sank in December 1991 after striking a reef on a stormy night, taking more than 470 lives in what remains one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in the region. She lies on her starboard side at 30 meters off Hyndman Reef, south of Safaga, and is dived as a somber memorial rather than a recreational exploration. Out of respect for the victims, most operators do not permit penetration of the Salem Express, and divers typically circumnavigate the exterior, paying respects at the distinctive entry ramp, the passenger cabins visible through the portholes, and the scattered personal effects — luggage, shoes, and life jackets — that rest on the seabed around the hull. The wreck's position on its side gives dramatic views of the hull, funnel, and distinctive superstructure, and the entire dive has the quiet, reverent atmosphere of an underwater cemetery. Marine life has begun to colonize the wreck. Glassfish schools inhabit the passenger areas (viewed only from outside portholes), resident giant moray eels patrol the hull breaks, and scorpionfish and lionfish blend into the encrusted decks. Soft corals and sponges are gradually covering the exterior, and the nearby reef attracts Napoleon wrasse, barracuda, and occasional reef sharks. The overall impression is one of a wreck slowly being reclaimed by the sea. The Salem Express is Advanced Open Water diving due to the 30-meter depth. She is reached exclusively by day boat from Safaga (30-45 minutes) and occasionally from southern Red Sea liveaboard itineraries. Visibility typically 15-25 meters. Diving the Salem Express carries an ethical dimension — some divers choose not to visit at all, and those who do are expected to observe silence, avoid photographs of personal effects, and dive with reverence for the site's history.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
