El Calamareo — a name derived from calamar, the Spanish for squid — is an advanced dive on Fuerteventura's southwestern coast near Punta de Jandía, named for the cephalopod species that characterise its deeper, open-water environment. In the productive Atlantic waters off the Jandía Peninsula, squid are predators of genuine significance — often appearing in large aggregations that attract the larger predators that make open-water advanced diving so unpredictably exciting. Fuerteventura's southwestern extremity faces the open Atlantic more directly than any other section of the island's coast, and the marine life here reflects the productivity of Atlantic deep water brought close to the surface by coastal upwelling and tidal effects around the peninsula's tip. The squid for which the site is named are among the beneficiaries of this productivity, gathering in the nutrient-rich water to feed on smaller fish and crustaceans, and in turn attracting the tuna, barracuda, and other apex predators that create the dynamic open-water encounters that advanced pelagic diving delivers. The advanced designation reflects both the depth of the site's most productive sections and the exposed, current-influenced conditions of the southwestern coast. Diving here requires solid experience with open-water conditions, current management, and the unpredictability of pelagic environments where what happens next is genuinely uncertain. Local knowledge of the site's tidal patterns and current directions is valuable for planning effective dives. Below the surface, the volcanic basalt formations of the southwestern coast descend in steep, well-encrusted walls. The sponge and gorgonian community reflects the productivity of the surrounding water, and large grouper occupy the deeper sections of the formations. But El Calamareo's primary appeal is its open-water character and the possibility of the squid aggregations and their attendant predators that give the site its name. A genuinely pelagic advanced dive on one of the Canaries' most productive coastlines.
