Nuevo Horizonte — New Horizon — opens its name to interpretation: a dive site that offers divers a fresh perspective, a dive that extends the vista of open Atlantic blue to dramatic effect, or a name chosen by the dive community for a site that delivers the sense of discovery and possibility that good diving always provides. On Fuerteventura's remote southwestern Jandía coast, where the horizon is literally the open Atlantic Ocean without landfall for thousands of kilometres, the name carries genuine geographic resonance. The southwestern tip of Fuerteventura's Jandía Peninsula faces west toward the Americas across open Atlantic water, and the sense of oceanic openness that this position creates is palpable both above and below the surface. The diving here has the character of a genuinely remote coastal environment: marine life that has developed with minimal human disturbance, Atlantic water of exceptional clarity, and the backdrop of an ocean horizon that reminds the diver of the larger world beyond the reef edge. The reef at Nuevo Horizonte is typical of the Jandía Peninsula's excellent beginner sites: volcanic basalt formations at accessible depths, their surfaces colonised by the sponge and anemone community that builds under the protection of the peninsula's biosphere reserve status. The endemic Canary Islands wrasse species are conspicuous throughout, and large dusky grouper occupy territorial positions on the reef's prominent formations with the bold confidence of well-protected animals. The 'new horizon' quality of the dive is expressed in the view from the reef edge into open Atlantic blue — in Fuerteventura's typically clear water, this perspective extends to distances that genuinely evoke the oceanic open horizon of the site's name. Angel sharks rest on the sandy sections between reef formations, and the open water beyond the reef edge occasionally delivers the pelagic encounters that make Atlantic island diving so unpredictably exciting. A beginner dive with a genuinely oceanic character.
