Chucho Rif — Eagle Ray Reef in the Canarian fishing tradition, where 'chucho' names the magnificent eagle ray that local fishermen have long observed in these waters — is a beginner dive site on Gran Canaria's southwest coast that lives up to its evocative name with regular sightings of these graceful animals gliding over the sandy seafloor and reef. Eagle rays — Aetobatus narinari in their spotted Atlantic form — are among the most memorable encounters available to divers in the Canary Islands. Their distinctively shaped heads, spotted dorsal surfaces, and the elegance of their flight through the water column make a sighting immediately recognisable and long remembered. At Chucho Rif, these animals appear reliably enough to justify the name, patrolling the sandy areas between reef structures in their characteristic undulating glide and occasionally hovering close to the reef edge where prey may be found. The reef itself is a basalt formation characteristic of Gran Canaria's volcanic southwest coast, its surface colonised by the encrusting community appropriate to the island's warm, sheltered southern waters. Sponge colonies, anemone carpets, and the abundant wrasse species endemic to the Canary Islands provide the backdrop against which the eagle ray appearances become particularly dramatic. Dusky grouper occupy territorial positions on the reef's larger formations, and the schooling species — bogues, bream, and barracuda in their characteristic loose formations — circulate in open water above. For beginner divers, the combination of manageable conditions and the genuine possibility of a memorable wildlife encounter makes Chucho Rif an excellent site. Seeing your first eagle ray glide past at close range, its wingspan impressive and its movement liquid, is one of those moments that confirms the decision to learn to dive as fully justified.
