La Isleta takes its name from the distinctive peninsula that forms the northern tip of Gran Canaria — the rocky promontory that contains the ancient city of Las Palmas on its southern side while its northern coast faces the open Atlantic with the exposed, wave-washed character of a headland that has always been more rugged than welcoming. This intermediate dive off the Isleta peninsula explores underwater terrain shaped by this exposure: basalt formations sculpted by Atlantic swell, diverse marine life feeding on the productive currents that sweep around the headland. The Isleta's position as Gran Canaria's northernmost point means its underwater environment has a different character from the calm southern coast sites. The current is more pronounced, varying with tidal state in ways that need to be managed rather than ignored, and the depth transitions more dramatically than at sheltered reef sites. These characteristics place the dive in intermediate territory: manageable for divers with solid experience, but requiring active engagement with changing conditions rather than the passive observation that beginner sites allow. The basalt formations around La Isleta are richly encrusted with the Atlantic community that flourishes in productive, current-swept water. Sponge colonies are extensive, feather duster worms extend into the current from every crevice, and the hard coral formations that establish in Gran Canaria's warmer waters are present in good health. The fish biomass reflects the productivity of this exposed northern coast: larger schools, more predators, and the dynamic interaction between hunting and hunted species that defines high-energy coastal environments. Seabass — a prized predator of Gran Canaria's northern waters — appear here with greater regularity than at sheltered southern sites, hunting in the current with efficiency. Large amberjack and barracuda complete the predator roster on active fishing days. An intermediate dive with genuine variety and wildlife energy on Gran Canaria's most characterful headland.
