Charco Azul — the Blue Pool — is a natural volcanic formation on La Palma's western coast that creates one of the island's most distinctive diving environments. The name refers to a series of natural rock pools formed by basalt formations along the shoreline, and the same geology that creates these remarkable tidal pools extends seamlessly into the underwater terrain beyond, offering beginner divers a stunning and sheltered introduction to La Palma's volcanic reef system. The dive site is centred on the shallow volcanic reef immediately adjacent to the Charco Azul natural pools, an area where the basalt has been shaped into channels, ridges, and hollows by millennia of wave action. The result underwater is a landscape of considerable visual interest even at gentle depths — the black volcanic rock contrasts with the clear, intensely blue Atlantic water, and the encrusting organisms that colonise every surface add colour: orange sponges, white tube worm fans, purple coralline algae, and the vivid yellow-green of canary damselfish territories. The sheltered character of the site — protected in the calmer western coast orientation from the dominant northeast trade wind swell — makes it suitable for beginners across a wide range of conditions. Current is typically mild, and the depth profile allows novice divers to stay within comfortable limits while still finding interesting terrain to explore. The channels and ridges create natural routes through the reef that guide divers through the site without requiring sophisticated navigation skills. Fish life at Charco Azul is characteristic of La Palma's western coast: canary damselfish defend algae territories with disproportionate vigour, trumpet fish hang vertically in sea fan colonies waiting to ambush smaller fish, and ornate wrasse hunt industriously across every surface. Moray eels are present in good numbers, their heads visible from crevice openings throughout the reef. La Palma's waters are among the cleanest in the Canary Islands, and this quality is apparent in the visibility at Charco Azul — typically 20 metres or more, with the characteristic deep blue of Atlantic island water making every dive here feel open and luminous. For divers wanting to experience La Palma's volcanic reef character without the demands of the island's more challenging sites, Charco Azul is an ideal destination.
