Los Cancajos is La Palma's most accessible and best-developed dive area, a resort community on the island's eastern coast just south of the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. While La Palma's dramatic western shore sites attract advanced divers seeking volcanic walls and exposed Atlantic conditions, Los Cancajos offers a sheltered, well-organised introduction to the island's underwater world that suits beginners and casual divers perfectly. The eastern coast's calmer conditions result from geography: La Palma's mountainous interior shields this side from the prevailing Atlantic swell, and the gentle sea state makes Los Cancajos suitable for shore diving year-round. Entry is straightforward, and the dive unfolds on a basalt reef system that descends gradually from the shoreline — the kind of structured, manageable progression that builds confidence and allows new divers to absorb the environment without managing challenging conditions simultaneously. The reef is characterised by volcanic basalt terrain that is somewhat more weathered and encrusted than the raw formations of the south, its surfaces colonised by dense communities of sponges and sea anemones that provide both colour and habitat. Common octopus are reliably present in rock crevices, their dens often marked by a litter of shell fragments at the entrance. The Canary Islands wrasse species — ornate wrasse, Canary wrasse, and rainbow wrasse — are constant presences on the reef, moving through the algae-covered basalt with the restless energy characteristic of their family. The fish community here is a friendly introduction to Canarian reef species: abundant schools of bogues and bream circle in open water, sergeant major damselfish defend reef territories with energy disproportionate to their size, and large parrotfish work the algae methodically. Loggerhead sea turtles are occasional visitors along this eastern coast, and a sighting here has the spontaneous quality of a genuine encounter. An excellent entry point into La Palma's rich and varied diving world.
