The Cathedral is the most celebrated dive site in Lanzarote and one of the iconic dives of the Canary Islands — a volcanic arch formation of breathtaking scale and beauty that emerges from the underwater landscape near Puerto del Carmen, its natural archway framing views of deep blue Atlantic water in a setting that every diver who visits understands immediately why it earned this name. Few dive sites anywhere in the world combine the drama of underwater geology with the intimacy of an enclosed space and the scale of the open ocean as effectively as this one. The site lies just south of Puerto del Carmen's famous Playa Chica, where the volcanic basalt cliff that forms the underwater topography of this section of Lanzarote's coast develops a series of arch formations and tunnels, culminating in the main Cathedral arch: a tall, open tunnel through the basalt, large enough for several divers to pass through simultaneously, its interior walls encrusted with the shade-loving organisms that flourish in sheltered volcanic rock — encrusting sponges in vivid reds and purples, colonies of sea squirts, and the feather stars that extend delicate arms from every suitable crevice. The advanced designation reflects both the depth at which the main arch is found — typically between eighteen and thirty metres — and the current that can run along this exposed section of coast. Timing a Cathedral dive for slack water maximises bottom time in the arch and minimises the need for active current management. A dive torch reveals the interior's full colour, illuminating the encrusting community in the absence of natural light and transforming the experience from impressive to unforgettable. Beyond the arch, the open blue of the Atlantic frames views of schooling fish, and the large grouper and moray eels that inhabit the formation add wildlife interest to the geological spectacle. The Cathedral is bucket-list Canarian diving: there is simply nothing else quite like swimming through this arch as light filters through the opening onto brilliantly encrusted walls.
