Playa Chica is the most famous dive site in Lanzarote and among the most celebrated in the entire Canary Islands archipelago — a small, sheltered beach at the east end of Puerto del Carmen from which divers have been accessing extraordinary underwater terrain for decades, returning consistently with encounters that justify its iconic status. The combination of accessibility, reliable conditions, and genuinely exceptional marine life has made Playa Chica a destination dive: divers plan specifically to visit this site, not just to dive Lanzarote generally. The beach itself is compact and unpretentious — a narrow strip of sand sheltered by a natural headland, with the dive centre infrastructure of Puerto del Carmen providing support just a short distance away. From this entry point, divers reach a volcanic basalt reef that begins in the shallows and extends outward into the Atlantic, the reef structure creating the diverse habitat zones — shallow algae-covered rock, mid-depth sponge and anemone communities, and the deeper wall and sand sections — that produce such consistent marine life quality. Sea turtles are the site's most reliable large animal encounter. Loggerhead turtles have long used Playa Chica's reef as a foraging ground, and their tolerance of divers — developed through decades of regular, respectful interaction — allows the kind of extended, close observation that makes a turtle encounter memorable rather than merely a sighting. Individual turtles here approach to examine divers, cruise slowly across the reef in search of sponges and algae, and ascend to breathe at the surface before descending again — the complete natural behavioural repertoire of a large marine reptile in its undisturbed environment. Angel sharks rest on the sandy sections adjacent to and beneath the reef, and the large grouper and moray eels that inhabit the basalt formations add the quality and variety of a mature reef community. Playa Chica is where the Lanzarote diving story begins for most visitors, and for many, it remains the best dive they do on the island. Its reputation is entirely earned.
