The Wrecks at Costa Calero cluster in the deeper waters off Puerto Calero marina on Lanzarote's southeast coast, providing an advanced wreck diving experience in the well-developed dive zone that surrounds one of the island's principal boating harbours. Multiple vessels resting in the productive Atlantic waters off the marina have been colonised by the encrusting community that makes artificial reef diving in Lanzarote so rewarding, and the collection of structures provides variety across multiple dives from this well-serviced dive base. Puerto Calero sits between Puerto del Carmen and the Papagayo area on Lanzarote's southeast coast, in waters that share the generally calm, clear character of the island's sheltered southern dive zone. The advanced designation reflects the depth at which the wrecks rest rather than particularly challenging surface or current conditions — the southeast coast's relative shelter from the prevailing trade winds means that planning a dive here is more straightforward than at exposed north or northeast coast sites, but the wrecks' resting depth demands the air management and decompression awareness of experienced divers. The wrecks in the Costa Calero collection represent various stages of the biological transformation that is the most rewarding aspect of Lanzarote wreck diving: some are recently enough sunk to retain much of their structural detail beneath a growing veneer of encrusting organisms, while others have progressed further toward the full artificial reef stage where the vessel's form is visible through an extensive biological community. Each stage of this transformation offers its own specific diving pleasures — the structural legibility of a newer wreck versus the rich biology of an established artificial reef. Common octopus, moray eels, and the large grouper that colonise Lanzarote's protected waters are consistent features of the Costa Calero wrecks. The sandy seafloor surrounding the structures provides habitat for the angel sharks that characterise Lanzarote's advanced dive sites. A productive and varied wreck dive collection in the island's most accessible advanced dive zone.
