HMS Scylla is Europe's first purposely-sunk artificial reef, a decommissioned Royal Navy Leander-class frigate scuttled in 2004 in Whitsand Bay near Plymouth, Devon. The 113-meter warship sits upright on a sandy seabed at around 24 meters depth, with her superstructure rising to approximately 12 meters from the surface. The wreck has been progressively colonized by marine life including soft corals, anemones, hydroids, and dense schools of pollock and bib. Large conger eels and lobsters inhabit the interior spaces. Penetration is possible through specially prepared access points, though advanced skills are required. HMS Scylla represents a landmark marine conservation project and offers an accessible, historically significant wreck dive within easy reach of Plymouth dive operators.
