Óttarstaðavegur is a beginner-friendly shore dive site on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, offering easy access to the North Atlantic's cold-water marine environment. The volcanic rocky seabed provides habitat for a variety of cold-water species including wolffish, lumpfish, and various flatfish species camouflaged against the dark lava substrate. Kelp forests sway in the gentle surge, sheltering crabs, sea urchins, and starfish, while colourful encrusting sponges and anemones add unexpected bursts of color to the volcanic rock. The site's sheltered aspect provides calmer conditions than more exposed Reykjanes sites, making it suitable for divers gaining confidence in cold-water conditions. Visibility varies seasonally but can be surprisingly good during winter months. Óttarstaðavegur represents the accessible side of Icelandic ocean diving, where everyday shore dives reveal the hardy beauty of North Atlantic marine ecosystems thriving on Iceland's volcanically active coastline.
