Fish Tank is an intermediate reef dive on Grand Cayman's north coast that lives up to its aquarium-inspired name with an exceptional concentration of marine life at 18 metres depth. The site's reputation for delivering consistently fish-rich dives has made it a favourite among dive operators seeking to impress visitors with the Cayman Islands' marine abundance. The reef at Fish Tank features a series of large coral mounds separated by sand channels, creating a complex landscape that provides diverse habitats within a compact diving area. The mounds are topped with healthy hard coral growth, while their sides support dense sponge and soft coral communities. The sand channels between mounds serve as natural highways for bottom-dwelling species and provide clear swimming lanes for divers. The sheer quantity of fish at this site is what sets it apart. Dense schools of blue chromis hover above the reef mounds in shimmering clouds, while yellowtail snappers form loose aggregations along the reef edges. Schools of bar jacks cruise through with predatory intent, their organised formations contrasting with the more chaotic movements of the smaller reef fish. Friendly groupers of multiple species, including Nassau groupers and tiger groupers, approach divers with the bold curiosity for which Cayman fish are famous. Cleaning stations are exceptionally active at Fish Tank, with cleaner wrasses and gobies operating busy practices on prominent coral heads. Watching a large grouper patiently hover with gills flared and mouth agape while tiny cleaners work their magic is one of the reef's most fascinating behavioural displays. The intermediate rating reflects mild currents that sweep the north coast, carrying nutrients that sustain the site's impressive biomass. The 18-metre depth is manageable for most certified divers, allowing generous bottom times for fish observation. Visibility at Fish Tank typically exceeds 25 metres, with water temperatures between 27 and 29 degrees. This site is a testament to the health and diversity of Grand Cayman's marine ecosystems.
