Snapper Hole is an intermediate dive on Grand Cayman's south coast, where the coral reef that surrounds this British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean creates a concentrated habitat for the snapper species that give the site its name. Grand Cayman is celebrated worldwide for the quality and variety of its diving — from the famous Stingray City in the North Sound to the dramatic walls of the North Wall — and Snapper Hole is part of the south coast's contribution to that reputation. Grand Cayman's south coast is less intensively dived than the more accessible western shore sites, giving the reefs here a character that reflects reduced diver traffic: fish populations that are larger and less habituated, coral coverage that has developed with less disturbance, and the overall quality of a reef that has been given more space to develop. The intermediate conditions — depth, occasional current, and the more exposed character of south coast dive sites — also contribute to the site's less-visited quality. The snapper aggregations that define the site can be genuinely impressive. Caribbean reef life supports multiple snapper species in this environment — yellowtail snapper, schoolmaster, and the larger cubera and dog snapper — and the congregations that accumulate in productive reef structures can number in the hundreds, their loose schooling formations above and around the reef creating the kind of fish density that underwater photographers specifically seek. These schools attract the predators that hunt them: reef sharks, grouper, and the barracuda that patrol the school's perimeter. The reef itself is characteristic Grand Cayman: excellent coral coverage including large brain and star coral formations, healthy sea fan gardens, and the diverse fish community of a well-maintained Caribbean reef. Eagle rays are regular along the south coast, their spotted forms gliding over the sandy sections adjacent to the reef with the unhurried elegance that always makes these animals a highlight. An intermediate dive with genuinely impressive aggregation wildlife in an excellent Caribbean reef setting.
