Old Isaacs is an intermediate reef and wall dive on Grand Cayman's south coast, descending to 20 metres along a section of reef that transitions from shallow coral gardens to the beginnings of the southern wall system. This site offers a satisfying middle ground between the easy shore dives and the deep wall dives that characterise Cayman diving. The dive begins on a well-developed shallow reef at 8 to 10 metres, where a rich coral community provides the setting for the initial exploration. Hard coral coverage is excellent, with mountainous star coral forming massive dome-shaped colonies that have been growing for decades. Lettuce coral, finger coral, and brain coral add variety to the hard coral community, while gorgonians in multiple species create a soft, swaying forest above the reef. The reef gradually gives way to a sloping wall face at around 15 metres, where the character of the dive changes. The wall hosts a different community of organisms adapted to reduced light and increased current exposure. Sponges become the dominant life form, with barrel sponges, rope sponges, and vase sponges in various sizes and colours lining the wall. The deeper sections feature delicate deep-water gorgonians and the occasional black coral colony. Hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered at Old Isaacs, drawn by the abundant sponge life that forms a major part of their diet. Watching a turtle methodically feed on a barrel sponge, its powerful beak tearing chunks from the sponge's body, is a fascinating display of feeding ecology in action. Green turtles are also seen, typically resting on sandy patches between coral formations. The south coast location provides typically calm surface conditions, making boat operations comfortable and entries and exits easy. Visibility averages 20 to 30 metres, with the crystalline Cayman water allowing views across the entire reef from the wall edge. Old Isaacs rewards those who venture beyond Grand Cayman's more famous dive sites with pristine reef conditions and peaceful diving.
