Playing Fields is a beginner dive site on Grand Cayman's eastern coast — a shallow, relatively flat reef area whose name captures the open, accessible character of this less trafficked section of the island's underwater geography. The eastern coast of Grand Cayman is a world removed from the famous western sites, with the quieter, more pristine quality of a reef that receives a fraction of the daily diving attention of Seven Mile Beach and the north wall, and this relative peace is one of the site's most appealing characteristics. The flat reef terrain that gives the site its name is characteristic of the shallower sections of the eastern reef, where the protected inner reef flat extends in a landscape of coral patches, sand channels, and sea grass beds before the depth increases toward the wall edge. This open, navigable terrain is excellent for beginner divers who can explore freely within the shallow depth range without the complexity of three-dimensional formations and caverns that some other Cayman sites require. Fish life on the Playing Fields is characteristically east coast Cayman — present in good diversity and less habituated to divers than the western reef species that see hundreds of divers weekly. The fish here display more natural behaviour, approaching with more genuine curiosity and less conditioned expectation of food, and this authenticity gives the encounter quality a different character from the western sites. Large parrotfish in terminal phase plumage are particularly impressive on the eastern reef, their vivid colouration standing out against the well-lit shallow substrate. Sea turtles are reliable companions on the Playing Fields dive, their use of the eastern coast's quieter waters and abundant sea grass making them more consistently present here than at some of the busier western sites. The overall experience of diving Playing Fields is one of undisturbed Caribbean reef life in an accessible format — less famous than the western sites but no less genuine, and arguably more representative of how Grand Cayman's reefs look when given adequate rest from tourism pressure.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
