The Arch is an intermediate dive site on Grand Cayman's south coast, featuring a natural archway in the reef structure at 18 metres that provides the dive's focal point and signature swim-through experience. This geological formation, carved from the limestone reef by centuries of water movement, creates one of the most photogenic natural underwater features along Grand Cayman's southern coastline. The archway is substantial enough for two divers to pass through simultaneously, with the opening framed by dense coral growth that accentuates its dramatic proportions. Natural light streaming through the arch creates ethereal conditions for photography, particularly during midday when sunbeams penetrate at optimal angles. The arch's interior surfaces are adorned with sponges and small coral colonies, adding texture and colour to the already impressive geological feature. The surrounding reef at The Arch is classic Caribbean in character, with well-developed spur-and-groove formations radiating outward from the coastline. The coral coverage is healthy and diverse, featuring the full range of Caribbean hard coral species alongside extensive gorgonian gardens. Barrel sponges of various sizes are scattered across the reef, their distinctive form providing reliable landmarks for navigation. Marine life at The Arch benefits from the site's position on the quieter south coast. Nassau groupers of impressive size occupy favoured ledges, their curiosity about divers reflecting the relatively low traffic this site receives. Schooling fish including blue tangs, doctorfish, and ocean surgeonfish move across the reef in disciplined formations, their coordinated movements creating living murals against the coral backdrop. The sandy channels between reef spurs frequently reveal eagle rays cruising with effortless grace, and turtle sightings are common throughout the dive. The arch structure itself sometimes shelters tarpon, adding to the site's diverse encounter list. Visibility typically exceeds 25 metres, with water temperatures between 27 and 29 degrees. The Arch combines geological interest with excellent marine life for a well-rounded intermediate dive.
