Tarpon Terrace is an advanced dive site on Grand Cayman's south coast in the Cayman Islands, where a coral-encrusted terrace at 18 metres depth attracts impressive gatherings of Atlantic tarpon. These magnificent silver fish, which can exceed two metres in length, are the undisputed stars of this dive and provide some of the most dramatic marine encounters in Cayman waters. The site's structure consists of a series of coral ledges stepping down from the shallow reef flat toward the deeper wall. The terrace that gives the site its name forms a broad platform at around 15 to 18 metres, where an overhang creates a sheltered area that tarpon use as a resting and cleaning station. Approaching this area slowly, divers are rewarded with the sight of multiple tarpon hovering motionless in the water column, their massive silver scales reflecting ambient light in a mesmerising display. Beyond the tarpon, the reef at Tarpon Terrace supports a healthy Caribbean coral community. Large barrel sponges anchor themselves to prominent reef features, while tube sponges in vivid purples and yellows add colour accents. Hard coral coverage includes impressive brain coral colonies and stands of pillar coral, with sea fans and sea rods filling the gaps between hard coral heads. The Caribbean reef fish community is well represented, with queen angelfish, French angelfish, and rock beauties providing flashes of colour among the coral. Schools of blue chromis hover above the reef, and Nassau groupers occupy favoured positions beneath overhangs. Cleaning stations are active throughout the dive, with small cleaner wrasses servicing larger fish in a fascinating display of marine symbiosis. The advanced rating reflects the site's exposure to current and its depth rather than any particular hazard. The south coast receives less diving attention than Grand Cayman's famous West Wall, meaning the reef condition here is notably pristine. Visibility at Tarpon Terrace typically exceeds 25 metres, with water temperatures holding steady between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius year-round. This site is a must-visit for divers seeking close encounters with one of the Caribbean's most impressive fish species.
