Kelly's Caverns is an intermediate Grand Cayman dive site that joins the pantheon of Cayman cavern dives — a geological feature in the reef system that creates the enclosed, multi-dimensional environment where the most distinctive Cayman marine life concentrations occur. Named in the tradition of eponymous Cayman site naming, Kelly's Caverns provides an experience distinct from the famous Devil's Grotto and Eden Rock but sharing their essential character: enclosed reef spaces that shelter extraordinary concentrations of life in an architectural setting of genuine drama. The intermediate rating at Kelly's Caverns reflects the depth of the cavern openings and the navigation demands of exploring an enclosed reef environment responsibly. Cavern diving — in openings large enough that natural light is always visible and a direct ascent path is always available — differs from technical cave diving in important ways, but it still requires more attention and experience than open reef diving. Buoyancy management is particularly critical in enclosed spaces, where improper technique immediately disturbs the sediment that has accumulated on cavern floors and walls, reducing visibility and potentially damaging the biological communities that colonise the surfaces. The biological community within Kelly's Caverns is characteristic of protected, semi-enclosed reef spaces in the Cayman system. Cup corals carpet the cavern walls in vivid orange and yellow, their small polyp flowers expanding fully in the current-protected interior. Sponge communities colonise the ceiling and shaded wall sections. Copper sweepers — small, bronze-scaled schooling fish — aggregate in the darker interior spaces in the pulsing formations that have made similar fish in Mediterranean caves famous. Moray eels thread through the cavern crevices, and the larger fish that use the cavern as a refuge or territory — grouper and barracuda — make occasional striking appearances. For intermediate divers on Grand Cayman who want to add cavern diving experience to their reef and wall diving repertoire, Kelly's Caverns provides a well-managed, appropriately challenging site that builds the skills and confidence for the more demanding cavern systems that Grand Cayman and the wider Caribbean world has to offer.
