Orange Canyon is one of Grand Cayman's premier advanced dive sites, a canyon formation in the wall system whose name derives from the extraordinary orange sea fan colonies that carpet its walls — gorgonian corals of impressive size that have colonised the sheltered canyon faces in densities that create a landscape of saturated colour in the filtered Caribbean light. The canyon provides both the depth that earns the site its advanced rating and the concentrated biological richness that makes the depth worthwhile. The canyon itself is a geological feature in the Cayman wall — a cleft that extends from the reef lip downward into the wall face, creating sheltered vertical terrain on either side that supports the most productive sea fan growth on the island. These gorgonian colonies grow perpendicular to the canyon walls, extending horizontally into the canyon space in orientations calibrated to catch the current that funnels through the formation. The largest sea fans span several metres, their lacework fans providing the filtration surface area that allows these organisms to extract sufficient food from even moderate plankton concentrations. The orange of the canyon walls is not a uniform hue but a spectrum of orange shades — from pale peach to deep burnt orange — produced by the combination of the gorgonian tissue colouration and the biological species growing on and among the fans. When illuminated with a dive light in the deeper sections of the canyon where ambient light is reduced, the orange intensifies dramatically, creating an effect that makes the site as spectacular on a torch-lit dive as in natural light. Fish life in Orange Canyon is excellent. The canyon structure concentrates the species that prefer sheltered, current-influenced environments: large grouper occupy the deeper sections of the canyon, schools of snapper hover at the canyon entrance, and the cleaning station dynamics that operate on the large sea fan colonies bring a steady traffic of fish seeking parasite removal. For advanced divers who want to see the Cayman wall system at its most biologically spectacular, Orange Canyon is the site that most consistently delivers on the promise its name makes.
