Sunset Reef is a Grand Cayman beginner dive site positioned on the island's western shore to take advantage of the afternoon light that gives it its name — the reef that is best experienced as the sun descends toward the Caribbean horizon, its warm evening light filtering through the water and illuminating the coral formations in the golden, amber-tinted quality that photographers travel to capture and that divers experience as one of the most beautiful moments in reef diving. In Grand Cayman's well-organised dive schedule, afternoon dives at western shore sites like Sunset Reef are deliberately planned for this quality of light. The reef itself is an excellent example of the western shore coral community — healthy coral coverage with the full range of Caribbean reef-building species represented in good condition, the fish populations abundant and approachable, and the water clarity exceptional in the typical Grand Cayman fashion. The afternoon timing that the name suggests enhances the underwater experience: the angle of afternoon sunlight creates dramatic relief on the coral formations, bringing out the three-dimensional structure of brain coral convolutions and sea fan lacework in ways that the flat, overhead light of midday does not achieve. The fish life at Sunset Reef is characteristically Cayman in its quality and diversity. Large parrotfish in terminal phase colours — vivid blue-green contrasting with the coral substrate — are particularly photogenic in the afternoon light. Angelfish pairs move through the reef with the territorial authority that afternoon diving tends to produce, the fish more active in the slightly cooler temperatures of late afternoon than in the midday heat. Turtles are present and often relaxed in the afternoon, resting on coral formations in postures that the later light illuminates beautifully. For beginner divers on Grand Cayman, Sunset Reef provides both an excellent reef dive and an education in the way that light timing affects the underwater visual experience — a lesson that experienced underwater photographers know well, and that Sunset Reef's naming makes explicit for every visitor.
