Ras Chekka is a beginner-friendly dive site along Lebanon's northern Mediterranean coast, near the town of Chekka in the North Governorate. This accessible site introduces divers to the rich marine heritage of the eastern Mediterranean, where ancient history and underwater ecology intersect along a rugged limestone coastline. The headland at Ras Chekka features a rocky coastline where limestone cliffs descend into the Mediterranean, creating an underwater terrain of boulders, rock shelves, and small walls. The shore entry is straightforward, with divers navigating a gentle slope over rocky substrate that gradually deepens to reveal the site's features. The Mediterranean marine life at Ras Chekka reflects the unique ecology of the Levantine Basin, where warmer waters compared to the western Mediterranean support a distinct community of species. Groupers, including dusky groupers and goldblotch groupers, inhabit the rocky crevices, while ornate wrasses and rainbow wrasses add colour to the reef. Damselfish defend small territories among the rocks, and octopuses occupy sheltered dens in the boulder field. The rocky substrate supports growths of algae and encrusting organisms typical of the eastern Mediterranean, with sea urchins and starfish visible on exposed surfaces. Posidonia seagrass beds in the shallower areas provide important habitat for juvenile fish and seahorses, making slow exploration of these areas particularly rewarding. Lebanon's diving scene is developing steadily, with a growing community of divers exploring the country's coastline. Ras Chekka benefits from the relatively clear waters of the north coast, where reduced urban runoff compared to the Beirut area allows better visibility. Water temperatures range from 17 degrees in winter to 28 degrees in summer, with the warmest months from June to October offering the most comfortable diving. Ras Chekka provides an accessible entry point to Lebanese diving, demonstrating the unexpected richness of the eastern Mediterranean's underwater world.
