Atharamba Rock is an intermediate dive site off Sri Lanka's southern coast near Matara, reaching 21 metres at a rocky formation that supports a healthy reef ecosystem. The site provides experienced beginner and intermediate divers with a more challenging experience than the shallow sites while remaining within comfortable recreational diving limits. The rock formation creates a substantial underwater feature, with walls, overhangs, and passages that add three-dimensional interest to the dive. The formation's orientation relative to the prevailing current creates distinct sheltered and exposed faces, each supporting different marine communities. This duality provides variety within a single dive as divers circuit the formation. Coral growth is healthy, with the formation's depth range supporting diverse coral assemblages. Shallower surfaces host branching and table corals, while the deeper sections favour massive coral species, soft corals, and impressive sponge growth. The vertical faces between depth zones create transitional habitats where species from both zones overlap. Marine life is diverse and abundant. Schools of reef fish including snappers, fusiliers, and sweetlips aggregate around the formation, using it as shelter from the open water predators that patrol the surrounding area. Moray eels are common residents, and the rocky crevices shelter lobsters and various crab species. Sea turtles are regularly encountered, and the formation's depth occasionally brings encounters with larger species. The intermediate rating reflects the 21-metre depth and the moderate current conditions that develop around the exposed rock. Divers should be comfortable with buoyancy management at depth and able to handle changing current directions. Best conditions from November to April, with visibility of 8 to 15 metres and water temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees.
