Polhena Reef is a beginner-friendly dive and snorkelling site located at Polhena Beach near Matara on Sri Lanka's southern tip. This shallow, sheltered reef provides one of the most accessible marine experiences on the south coast, with calm conditions protected by a natural breakwater of rocks that creates a tranquil pool-like environment. The reef at Polhena sits within a naturally enclosed area where rock formations break the incoming ocean swell, creating remarkably calm conditions even when seas are rough beyond the barrier. This protection makes the site suitable for diving and snorkelling year-round, a significant advantage in a region where many sites are seasonal. Coral coverage at Polhena is patchy but recovering, with areas of healthy growth interspersed with sections of coral rubble from past damage. Conservation awareness among local communities has improved, and the reef shows encouraging signs of regeneration. Branching corals, brain corals, and table corals are re-establishing, providing structure for a growing fish community. The site is particularly well known for its resident sea turtle population. Green turtles are frequently encountered feeding on the seagrass and algae that grow within the protected area. The turtles are remarkably tolerant of human presence, often allowing swimmers and divers to observe them at very close range. Hawksbill turtles also visit, though less frequently than the greens. Reef fish typical of the Indian Ocean inhabit the coral formations, including butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and various species of wrasse. The sheltered conditions also make Polhena an excellent night diving location, where octopuses, crabs, and lobsters emerge to hunt across the reef. Water temperatures at Polhena remain warm at 27 to 29 degrees throughout the year. Visibility within the protected area ranges from 5 to 10 metres, occasionally better. Polhena Reef is an ideal site for families and beginning divers seeking gentle, turtle-rich marine encounters.
