Dondra Point is a beginner-friendly dive site at the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, where the Indian Ocean meets the waters around the island's dramatic Dondra Head lighthouse. This significant geographical landmark creates equally interesting underwater conditions, with the confluence of currents and habitats producing a diverse marine environment accessible to all certification levels. The underwater topography at Dondra Point features a rocky seabed extending from the shore, with the granite and gneiss formations creating a terrain of ledges, boulders, and sandy patches. The point's position at the island's southern extremity means it receives water from both the western and eastern coasts, creating mixing conditions that enhance marine biodiversity. Coral coverage at the site is developing well, with hard coral species establishing on the rocky substrate in areas protected from the strongest current. Soft corals and gorgonians add colour to the vertical faces of rock formations, while the horizontal surfaces support algae and seagrass communities. The mix of habitat types within a small area creates a mosaic of microenvironments that support varied marine life. The marine community at Dondra Point includes an impressive variety of species. Reef fish are abundant, with schools of snapper, fusilier, and surgeonfish moving along the reef edge. Sea turtles are regular visitors, drawn by the productive feeding conditions at this current-influenced site. During the right season, the point's position can bring seasonal visitors including pelagic fish and even cetaceans in the blue water beyond the reef. The beginner rating applies to the sheltered inner sections of the reef, though more exposed areas closer to the point itself can experience stronger currents suitable for more experienced divers. This range of conditions within a single site makes Dondra Point versatile for groups with mixed experience levels. Visibility ranges from 8 to 20 metres, with the best conditions during the northeast monsoon. Water temperatures remain warm year-round at 27 to 29 degrees.
