Canyons de Babodie is an advanced dive in the waters of Saint-Pierre on Martinique's northwestern coast — a site of profound historical significance and exceptional marine life combined in one of the Caribbean's most celebrated diving destinations. Saint-Pierre was Martinique's elegant colonial capital until the catastrophic eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, which destroyed the city in minutes and sank all eighteen vessels in the harbour, killing approximately 30,000 people. Today, this 'Pompeii of the Sea' hosts more than twenty wrecks, and Canyons de Babodie explores the underwater geological and biological landscape surrounding this extraordinary history. The Babodie canyons — natural or lava-flow-created underwater ravines in the volcanic seafloor — provide the topographic framework for the dive, their walls descending through a seascape that has been transformed by the 1902 eruption's underwater effects. Volcanic debris, lava flows, and the accumulated marine community of more than a century create a composite landscape of geological and biological interest that rewards experienced divers with the background to appreciate both dimensions. The advanced rating reflects the depth of the canyon systems, the current that can develop in the more exposed sections of the Saint-Pierre dive zone, and the experience required to navigate complex underwater topography while managing air and decompression effectively. Local dive guide knowledge is valuable — the Saint-Pierre dive area is complex, and guides familiar with the specific geography of the Babodie canyons can direct divers to the most interesting sections within the limitations of recreational diving. The marine life in the canyons reflects the productivity of Saint-Pierre's historically protected, little-fished waters. Large grouper occupy the canyon walls, schooling fish form dense formations in the current-swept canyon mouths, and the encrusting community on the canyon walls has developed to the full extent of Caribbean reef potential over decades of relative undisturbed growth. An advanced dive with geological, historical, and biological richness in equal measure.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
