La Thérèsa Lo Vigo is an advanced wreck dive in the Saint-Pierre dive zone on Martinique's northwestern coast, where one of the vessels sunk in or near the harbour during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902 rests at depth as one of the historical collection that has made Saint-Pierre one of the Caribbean's most celebrated dive destinations. This is wreck diving with genuine historical depth — a vessel that was present at one of the most dramatic volcanic disasters in recorded history, now resting in the warm Caribbean waters as a memorial, an artificial reef, and an advanced diving adventure. The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre and its harbour contents in what may have been the deadliest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. The eighteen ships in the harbour were sunk by the thermal effects of the volcanic cloud, their crews and passengers killed in the disaster that eliminated the city's approximately 30,000 inhabitants. In the more than a century since, the wrecks have become an extraordinary artificial reef system, each vessel in its own stage of biological transformation and historical preservation. La Thérèsa Lo Vigo rests at the depth that makes it an advanced dive — below twenty metres, with the decompression management and air consumption awareness that deeper wreck diving demands. The vessel's structure, identifiable as a ship of its era despite the biological colonisation of more than a century, provides both the historical narrative and the architectural framework for the marine community that has developed on its surfaces. Dense sponge colonies, large gorgonian fans, and the Caribbean reef fish that use the wreck as territory have created a biological community of genuine richness. Large grouper occupy the most prominent structural positions with territorial confidence, schools of fish circulate through the superstructure, and the open water adjacent to the wreck delivers the occasional turtle or eagle ray encounter that contextualises the site within the broader Saint-Pierre marine environment. One of the Caribbean's most historically resonant wreck dives.
