Billingshurst Cave is an advanced dive site on Gozo Island in Malta, offering a dramatic overhead environment experience within the Mediterranean's limestone geology. This cave system, carved by erosion into the island's ancient rock, provides atmospheric diving where natural light effects and geological formations combine to create an unforgettable experience. The cave entrance opens at moderate depth along Gozo's rugged coastline, leading into a series of chambers that extend into the limestone. The main chamber is spacious, with a ceiling high enough to avoid claustrophobic sensations, while narrower passages lead to secondary chambers deeper within the rock. The cave's geological features include smooth walls shaped by millennia of water flow and formations that reveal the layering of Malta's sedimentary rock. Natural light penetration is one of the cave's signature features. Openings in the rock allow shafts of Mediterranean sunlight to stream into the chambers, creating ethereal beams that move across the cave floor as the sun's angle changes. These light effects are most dramatic during midday when the sun is directly overhead, transforming the cave into a natural cathedral of blue light. Marine life within the cave includes species adapted to reduced light conditions. The walls support colourful sponges and tunicates, while shrimps and small crustaceans inhabit the darker recesses. Groupers and moray eels shelter in the cave's entrance zones, where the transition between open water and overhead environment creates productive feeding areas. The advanced rating reflects the overhead environment, the need for dive lights, and the buoyancy precision required to navigate without disturbing sediment or damaging cave formations. Visibility in Malta's waters is typically excellent, often exceeding 30 metres outside the caves. Water temperatures range from 15 to 26 degrees across the seasons. Billingshurst Cave is one of Gozo's most atmospheric diving experiences.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
