The Bottle is an advanced dive site on Gozo's north coast near Reqqa in Malta, named for a narrow bottle-shaped geological formation in the limestone reef. This unique feature creates an atmospheric swim-through experience within one of Gozo's most impressive underwater landscapes. The bottle formation is a narrow vertical chimney in the reef, wider at the bottom and tapering toward the top, creating the bottle shape that gives the site its name. Descending through the formation, divers experience the walls closing in as the chimney narrows, before emerging into open water at the base. The geological interest is fascinating, with the smooth walls revealing the limestone's layered composition. The surrounding reef at The Bottle features deep walls and complex boulder fields typical of Gozo's dramatic north coast. The wall drops steeply into the Mediterranean, with ledges and overhangs providing interest at every depth. The boulder field below the wall creates additional swim-throughs and exploration opportunities. Marine life around The Bottle benefits from the north coast's productive waters. Groupers are commonly sighted in the overhangs, while schools of bream and damselfish animate the water column. The narrow confines of the bottle formation itself tend to concentrate smaller species, with shrimps and small fish sheltering within. Barracuda and amberjack patrol the wall edge. The rock surfaces support typical Gozitan Mediterranean growth, with colourful sponges, false coral, and tunicates creating a vivid coating on the limestone. The deeper sections of the wall host larger sponge specimens and occasional deep-water species. The advanced rating reflects the depth, the confined space within the bottle formation, and the north coast's exposure to swell and current. Malta's exceptional visibility, frequently exceeding 30 metres, ensures safe navigation even in the narrower passages.
