Caravelle is a welcoming beginner dive site off Grand Bay in northern Mauritius, offering new divers their first taste of Indian Ocean reef life in the warm, sheltered waters that make this part of the island ideal for learning to dive. Named after the historic sailing vessels that once navigated these waters, the site provides a gentle introduction to the tropical underwater world, with shallow coral formations and abundant marine life that make every moment underwater a discovery. The short boat ride from Grand Bay's bustling waterfront builds anticipation as the turquoise water reveals hints of the reef below. The descent is gentle and controlled, dropping through warm water onto a sandy bottom scattered with coral formations that create a naturally structured diving environment. The depth remains comfortable throughout the dive, allowing beginners to focus on their buoyancy and breathing rather than monitoring depth gauges, and the shelter provided by the reef's position means currents are typically minimal. The coral formations at Caravelle, while not as dramatic as the deeper sites, are healthy and varied enough to provide genuine visual interest. Tabletop corals, small brain coral colonies, and branching formations create a patchwork of habitats that support a colorful community of reef fish. Damselfish in electric blue dart between the coral heads, clownfish nestle in their host anemones with characteristic boldness, and parrotfish crunch audibly on coral as they feed. The warmth and clarity of the water mean these encounters happen in vivid detail, with colors appearing almost supernaturally bright to divers experiencing tropical diving for the first time. The sandy areas between coral formations offer their own attractions. Goatfish probe the sand with their sensitive barbels, garden eels sway in the gentle current before retreating into their burrows at any approach, and the occasional stingray rests on the bottom, its outline barely visible until a fin or tail reveals its presence. Hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, and starfish populate the sand in easy-to-spot abundance. Caravelle captures the essence of what makes Mauritius special for beginner divers — warm water, gentle conditions, abundant marine life, and the infectious excitement of encountering a tropical reef for the first time. The site serves as the perfect gateway to Mauritius's underwater world, giving new divers the confidence and inspiration to continue their diving education in one of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful settings.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
