Bodu Giri is an intermediate dive site in Faadhippolhu Atoll (Lhaviyani Atoll), where a submerged reef formation — known as a giri in Dhivehi — rises from the atoll floor to create a concentrated ecosystem of tropical marine life accessible to divers with moderate experience. Giris, like their deeper cousins the thilas, are among the Maldives' most characteristic dive features, and Bodu Giri's accessible depth profile and healthy marine community make it an ideal introduction to these iconic underwater structures. The descent from the dive boat reveals the giri gradually, its coral-crowned summit emerging from the blue as a distinct mound on the atoll floor. The top of the formation is a garden of hard corals in excellent health — the shallow depth ensures maximum light penetration, promoting coral growth of vibrant color and impressive diversity. Tabletop corals provide shade for aggregating fish, branching formations create dense habitats for juvenile species, and massive dome corals anchor the structure with the permanence of long undisturbed growth. The giri's sides present different characters depending on current exposure. The current-facing slopes support soft coral communities — gorgonian fans and branching formations extend into the flow to feed, adding vivid color to the hard coral base. The sheltered side features larger hard coral formations and calmer conditions, with overhangs and small caves that shelter groupers, moray eels, and the dense schools of fish that characterize the giri's most productive habitats. Marine life at Bodu Giri is both abundant and varied. Schools of bannerfish and fusiliers create flowing formations above the giri's crown, while larger species including Napoleon wrasse, sweetlips, and reef sharks patrol the deeper slopes. Sea turtles are regular visitors, often resting on the coral or grazing on the reef surface. The macro life rewards close observation — nudibranchs, flatworms, and various shrimp species populate the coral surfaces, adding detail to the broader spectacle. Bodu Giri offers intermediate divers a complete Maldivian reef experience in a compact, accessible format — a submerged mountain of coral that concentrates the biodiversity of the Indian Ocean onto a single formation, demonstrating why the Maldives' underwater structures are among the most celebrated dive sites on Earth.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
