Kuredu Caves, affectionately nicknamed Turtles Airport by local dive guides for the extraordinary concentration of sea turtles that frequent its waters, combines atmospheric cave and overhang formations with some of the most reliable turtle encounters in Lhaviyani Atoll. This advanced thirty-meter site offers a dive experience that balances the thrill of overhead environments with the gentle charm of close-range turtle observation in a setting of genuine natural beauty. The cave formations at Kuredu have been carved into the reef structure by millennia of wave action and chemical erosion, creating a series of overhangs, swim-throughs, and semi-enclosed chambers that penetrate the reef wall at various depths. Natural light filters through multiple openings, creating dramatic beams that shift with the surface conditions above and illuminate the cave interiors with an ethereal blue glow. The walls and ceilings of these formations are coated in encrusting organisms that appear almost fluorescent when illuminated by dive torches. The turtle encounters that earned this site its nickname are remarkably consistent and often spectacular in their intimacy. Both hawksbill and green sea turtles frequent the area in numbers that can seem almost improbable, their established resting and feeding patterns bringing them past divers at regular intervals throughout the dive. The turtles appear to use the cave formations as resting stations, tucking into overhangs and ledges where they can reduce energy expenditure between feeding excursions. Approaching these resting animals slowly and respectfully often allows observation at remarkably close range. Beyond the turtles, the reef surrounding the caves supports a complete marine ecosystem. The outer wall drops away with impressive steepness, its face decorated with hard and soft corals in diverse formations. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper water beyond the cave entrances, their circuits creating a backdrop of predatory energy that contrasts with the turtles' peaceful presence. Schools of bannerfish and fusiliers stream past the cave openings, their movement framed by the natural rock architecture in scenes of stunning compositional beauty. Inside the caves, the marine community is distinctly adapted to the reduced light conditions. Soldierfish gather in dense schools, their red bodies and large eyes characteristic of cave-dwelling species. Lobsters retreat into narrow crevices, while shrimp species in brilliant whites and reds attend to their cleaning duties on the cave walls. Soft corals grow from ceiling surfaces in inverted gardens that add to the otherworldly atmosphere. Kuredu Caves delivers a multi-layered diving experience where geological drama, turtle encounters of extraordinary quality, and vibrant reef life combine to create one of Lhaviyani Atoll's most memorable and distinctive dive sites.
